Podcast 62: How To Make More Money And Have More Free Time with Dave Sullivan

The tagline for my podcast is, “learn how to grow your roofing business, make more money, and have more free time.” I use this because these are the top 3 problems that the roofing contractors I work with face in their businesses. But with this strong economy, most everyone is growing their business but they’re still not making the money they should and they certainly don’t have the free time they want to spend with their families. That’s what we are going to talk about today.

What you’ll hear in this episode:

  • Instead of learning from YOUR experiences, why not be smart and learn from the experiences of others? That’s why I’m here!
  • Three universal problems all roofing contractors face:
    • Not having enough qualified leads
    • Not making enough money
    • Not having any free time
  • The info from a Forbes magazine article gives new statistics showing a growth of 14% in the roofing industry in 2017 and profit margins that are steadily increasing
  • Being “the biggest guy in town” doesn’t always mean more profit, but it does mean more stress and overhead
  • “It’s not a volume-sensitive business; it’s a margin-sensitive business.”
  • How do you make more money and have more free time?
  • The three-legged stool: sell work, do work, and keep score
  • Two ways to make more money:
    • Sell your work fo rmore money
    • Do the work for less cost
  • How to have your team work smarter, but be sure to take good care of them
  • Develop better systems and processes to give you more free time
  • Goals:
    • Get in and out with the most amount of profit
    • To have a happy customer who pays his bills and leaves a review
    • To have customers who love us and refer to us other like-minded customers
    • Keep overhead as low as possible
  • Steps in the process:
    • Put the job package together
    • Do the pre-job conference (the most important step!). Make the hand-off from sales to production; talk about unforeseen circumstances, payment terms, start/finish dates, set-up details, and budget details.
    • During the job: conduct an email program to neighbors, handle materials responsibly, and try to get one new job
    • Do the final inspection and look for the “perfect 10”–show your quality control
    • Meet with the homeowner and go over the warranty package
    • Ask for a review and referrals (Have a set procedure for this in place)
  • Doing the work up-front will eliminate problems and stress later!
